CMM FINANCIAL UPDATE
By Anita C. Ng, CMM Finance Coordinator
During the 17 years of the Carolina Medical Mission, we have been fortunate to have generous donors to support our mission work. But despite the donations, almost every mission has had monetary deficits to meet the actual expenses of the joint medical/dental/surgical mission. During the early missions, most of these deficits were subsidized by the organizer’s own out-of-pocket donations. But CMM cannot count on such overrun subsidies for currently planned and future missions. Therefore, CMM contributions are designated to various funds, as follows:
Annual Medical Fund: Donations raised by the specific venue coordinators and PAANC related donations are placed in the Annual Medical Fund. Every cent goes to fund the CMM mission in that year’s specified venue.
US volunteer Fund: Each year, the US volunteers donate a specific amount of money to participate in the year’s mission. That donation is spent: to pay for the volunteer’s international and local airfare, board & lodging before, during and after mission; to pay for operating expenses: office supplies, uniform, stamps & newsletter printing; to pay for door to door shipment of medical supplies for the mission (US and Manila); to buy additional medicines needed for the mission (5% of donation); to adopt local Health professionals by paying their transportation and board & lodging. CMM must work with local medical care providers to insure compliance and follow up care. Approximately 60% of volunteers are local medical and lay staff.
Surgical Fund: Some donations are specifically designated towards general and cataract surgery. In addition to participating in the annual CMM Joint Medical Mission, Fred Ng and a group of Philippine-based doctors and nurses perform 5 to 8 additional general surgical missions in different provincial venues. Honorarium given to the local surgeons/nurses is drawn from the surgical fund only. This fund has also been used to subsidize deficits incurred by the CMM Joint Medical Mission.
Emergency Fund: With the help of some CMM volunteers, matching grants were applied for and received from GSK; Square D; Progress Energy, Sony-Ericsson, etc. Matching contributions are set aside in an emergency fund to subsidize any deficit incurred during a mission; unfortunately, these funds have been spent.
Miscellaneous Funds: Some donations are designated toward specific projects, such as
Gawad-Kalinga, Children’s Ministry; Typhoon Outreach, Priest Ministry, etc. These donations are directed to the specified project.
